On June 4, the TeenScreen National Center invited a panel of health experts from across the country to New York City to discuss two recent national health advisory organization reports that recommend integrating mental health checkups as part of regular adolescent health visits.

Rosemary Chalk, director of the Board on Children, Youth, and Families at the National Academy of Science’s Institute of Medicine (IOM), and Dr. Thomas DeWitt, member of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), answer questions after their presentation on the spring 2009 IOM and USPSTF recommendations calling for mental health screenings in adolescent primary care.

He explains the process of mental health checkups and discusses how quick and simple it is to integrate this potentially life-saving practice into primary care visits.
Dr. Lloyd Sederer, medical director for the New York State Office of Mental Health, Darcy Gruttadaro, J.D., director of the Child and Adolescent Action Center at the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and Catherine Finley, principal at Capitol Counsel and a former staff director for former Senator Gordon H. Smith (R-OR), discuss the policy implications and goals of mental health screenings in primary care settings. Laurie Flynn from the TeenScreen National Center moderates.
